Originally from Ireland, the tradition goes back to the word "All Hallows' Eve" (the eve of All Saints' Day). According to tradition, Jack the crook was able to escape hell by trickery, but he was also denied to enter into heaven. He was traveling with a hollowed out pumpkin that served as his lantern. For this reason, creepy grimaces are carved out of pumpkins and lit up - just like Jack O'Lantern did.
